As a young person in the 1980s, stoicism meant putting up with great pain and discomfort without complaining. The word had been separated from the philosophy, in much the same way that modernism was a style of design rather than a philosophy. Knowing the roots of things was too time-consuming. One had just enough information to know that the New Yorker cartoon was funny, but not enough to know why.
I have been enjoying the pod’s brevity, focus, clarity, and above all, its practicality. I am now primed to read the original texts with a modicum of insight.
